Protecting Our Rivers – Protecting Our Future
FASTA, the umbrella organisation representing angling clubs and private fisheries across the Foyle river system, has launched a major campaign calling for stronger action to combat pollution and protect fish stocks throughout the North-West.
Over recent years, pollution incidents have become alarmingly frequent across the region’s rivers and tributaries, resulting in devastating fish kills, habitat degradation, and long-term harm to salmon, sea trout, and other native species. FASTA warns that without coordinated and consistent action, the Foyle system’s rich natural heritage could face irreversible decline.
A Growing Threat to Our Waters
From algae blooms and discoloured water to reduced insect life and sudden fish deaths after heavy rainfall, anglers across the catchment are witnessing the signs of worsening water quality. Runoff from agriculture, industrial discharge, and failures in wastewater management have all contributed to the problem.
FASTA Chairman Francis Curran expressed deep concern over the trend, saying:
“Every time pollution strikes, we lose not just fish, but part of our shared future. These rivers have sustained generations of anglers and communities on both sides of the border. We cannot stand by while neglect and poor practices destroy what makes this region special.”
The FASTA Campaign – “Protect the Foyle: Clean Water for Life”
The new campaign, Protect the Foyle: Clean Water for Life, aims to mobilise local communities, anglers, and policymakers to restore and defend the integrity of the Foyle river system. Its key objectives include:
- Improved monitoring and reporting of water quality across the entire Foyle catchment.
- Stronger enforcement of environmental protection laws against illegal or negligent discharges.
- Cross-border collaboration between agencies, community groups, and fisheries for rapid response to pollution events.
- Public awareness initiatives encouraging everyone to recognise and report signs of pollution.
Mr. Curran added:
“We need better monitoring, tougher enforcement, and a renewed sense of shared responsibility. Everyone, from government to local landowners, has a part to play. Clean rivers are not a luxury; they’re a lifeline for biodiversity, recreation, and the local economy.”
Working Together for the Future
FASTA’s membership uniquely unites private fishery owners and community angling clubs, all working together to protect the Foyle’s vital ecosystem. The organisation continues to collaborate with agencies such as the Loughs Agency and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to promote responsible stewardship and ensure long-term sustainability.
“Our rivers are part of who we are,” Mr. Curran said. “They connect our communities, support our wildlife, and sustain livelihoods. Protecting them is everyone’s duty.”
How You Can Help
FASTA is calling on anglers, residents, and anyone who enjoys the natural beauty of the Foyle system to stay alert for signs of pollution and report incidents immediately to the Loughs Agency or NIEA.
Simple actions, such as preventing runoff, properly managing waste, and reducing chemical use near waterways, can collectively make a huge difference.
Together, we can protect the Foyle for future generations of fish, wildlife, and people.
